Sea Wings
HMCS Warrior
Launched on 20 May 1944 and completed on 24 January 1946 she was transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy, commissioned as HMCS Warrior and placed under the command of Captain Frank Houghton.[1] She entered Halifax harbour on 31 March 1946, a week after leaving Portsmouth. She was escorted by the destroyer HMCS Micmac and the minesweeper HMCS Middlesex. The RCN experienced problems with the unheated equipment during operations in cold North Atlantic waters off eastern Canada during 1947. The RCN deemed her unfit for service and, rather than retrofit her with equipment heaters, made arrangements with the Royal Navy to trade her for a more suitable aircraft carrier of th...

    One of the greatest British aircraft ever, some people would argue that the Spitfire or Lancaster was better but they couldn't do half of the things the Mosquito did like flying to Berlin and back twice in one night on a regular basis; the bomber versions famously very fast could cruise at 360 m.p.h (just remember that's the top speed of a Battle of Britain Spitfire!)! Spitfires never had the firepower that the Mosquito had. The Spitfire was a beautiful killing machine but the Mosquito did everything better with style and flair.

    These aircraft have an interesting state of modification. The nose turret has been replaced with the glazed nose and the mid-upper turret has been replaced with the later style, but the tailfins have not yet been replaced with the later style. Usually you only see pictures before modification, or with the mid-upper turret removed and nose turret faired over, or completely modified.

    The high speed and high ceiling made it nearly impossible to shoot down. And with only two crew, the loss of an aircraft was far less costly than the 4 engined aircraft. IMO they should have been used far more than they were.

    • @velocitymg
      @velocitymg Год назад

      They were used everywhere? Fighter bombers, night fighters, Light bombers, pathfinders, reconnaissance, maritime strike aircraft with torpedoes, rockets 57mm cannon. They were used in nearly every theatre and front line. High speed was one thing for a bomber, but against later fighters like an Fw190 or updated Me109 they could be in trouble and be chased down and the high altitude models were generally the recon models only that were stripped down with no guns. My favourite aircraft, it's just beautiful especially the Mk VI fighter bombers with the 4 cannon + 4 machine-guns in the nose and the Tse Tse MkXVIII with the 57mm Howitzer for hitting subs.

    One of the most interesting facts about the Halifax was that Sir Handley-Page himself hated the Merlin engine when everybody else seemed to want it dearly. He wanted the Bristol Hercules sleeve-valve engines, already fitted on the Short Stirling, but for all early Halifaxes was forced to take the Merlin instead. In principle he was right, since early Hercules engines offered more power than early Merlins and, typical of air-cooled radials, could sustain more battle damage than liquid-cooled V12s. Early Halifaxes suffered from fatal crashes due to handling vices. Aerodynamically revised later Halifaxes all had the much-desired Hercules and were quite successful. In contrast, Lancasters fitted with the Herc radials were not considered a success. Compared to the Lancaster, the Halifax had two drawbacks: a lower ceiling, making it more vulnerable to enemy Flak. Development of high altitude fighter engine supercharger design had been of great benefit to the Rolls-Royce Merlins. Second, it didn't have the unobstructed extra large bomb bay like the Lancaster. Therefore it could not drop large single bombs like the Tallboy which sank the German battleship Tirpitz

      The Mosquito could and did(!) fly to Berlin and back twice in one night on a regular basis. It flew so fast that by the time the Lancasters, Halifaxes and Stirlings had reached the Dutch German border on the way to Berlin the Mosquito would have got to Berlin, dropped it's bomb load and be on it's way back to base!

His follow on, the A-26 was even greater, serving in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. My personal favorite, having worked on them in the Navy was the A-4 and 2 seat TA-4 Skyhawk, AKA "Scooter."

    I’ve read an unofficial log book of one lucky Halifax crew who survived the war, on their first trip to Germany they shot down two enemy fighters and narrowly escaped being shot down themselves … they quickly learned that shooting their guns gave away their position, far better to dive erratically out of danger.
